Birds

30/07/25 A Little Egret was on the Area 7A Skinners Drive Balancing Pond . In Area 1 at Gorrick Plantation a Hobby was seen and heard calling by Mark Collings.

28/07/25 A Ring necked Parakeet was seen flying over Area 4 calling, this morning .

23/07/25 Seen by Fraser Cottington in Area 10 on the Dinton Activity Centre "beach" was a Grey Wagtail .

22/07/25 12 Swift were "screaming" over Area 4 by Paul Bright-Thomas.

21/07/25 In Area 7A Paul O'Neill was at Ashridge Meadows and saw 80 Starling a mix of adults and juveniles , 3 Whitethroat a singing Song Thrush , a male and female Linnet , a single Greenfinch and a male and female Stonechat .

18/07/25 Over Area 4 approx 32 Swift were seen by Paul Bright Thomas.

14/07/25 In Area 3 on the river and seen during Balsam pulling were 3 Grey Wagtail 2 adult and 1 juvenille. In Area 7A Paul O'Neill was at Ashridge Meadows and saw a Male Stonechat , a Female Kestrel and 8 Stock Dove on a recently cut meadow.

10/07/25 2 Swift were flying over my Area 4 garden at 20:00.

08/07/25 Paul O'Neill was at Ashridge Meadows again in Area 7A today and saw 3 Whitethroat and a male Stonechat .

05/07/25 Heard in Area 5 during the Litter pick were Chiffchaff a male Blackcap and a calling Great spotted Woodpecker. A Sparrowhawk visited my Area 4 garden this afternoon scattering all the birds.

02/07/25 Paul O'Neill was at Ashridge Meadows in Area 7A today and saw 4 Skylark a male Lesser Whitethroat singing from the boundary hedge between Ashridge Meadows and Kentwood Meadow. and an adult Song Thrush carrying food.

Insects

27/07/25 Catoptria pinella The moth -trap, was out again in my Area 4 garden overnight on 26/07/25 and emptied this morning.The catch was 56 moth's of 37 species. Rhyacionia pinicolana Highlights were the micro moths Catoptria pinella and Rhyacionia pinicolana and Codling Moth Cydia pomonella   Codling Moth  With 9 new moth species added ,the total for 2025 is now 242 species. Following inspection and recording/photographing anything caught was released.

25/07/25 Light Crimson Underwing The moth -trap, was out in my Area 4 garden overnight on 24/07/25 and emptied this morning.The catch was 55 moth's of 28 species. Lime-speck Pug Highlights were Light Crimson Underwing Catocala promissa , Lime-speck Pug Eupithecia centaureata and Diamond-back Moth Plutella xylostella   Diamond-back Moth   This tiny moth is well-known for its migratory tendencies. Sometimes many thousands can appear during the night at coastal migration watch-points. With 2 new moth species added ,the total for 2025 is now 233 species. Following inspection and recording/photographing anything caught was released.

23/07/25  Sallow Kitten The moth -trap, was out in my Area 4 garden overnight on 22/07/25 and emptied this morning.The catch was 35 moth's of 21 species. Cochylidia implicitana Highlights were Sallow Kitten Pterostoma palpina , the micro moth Cochylidia implicitana and Mottled Beauty Alcis repandata   Mottled Beauty  With 2 new moth species added ,the total for 2025 is now 231 species. Following inspection and recording/photographing anything caught was released.

22/07/25  Knopper Gall The Knopper gall wasp Andricus quercuscalicis produces knobbly red, turning to brown, growths, or 'galls', on the acorns of Pedunculate Oak. Inside the gall, the larvae of the wasp feed on the host tissues, but cause little damage. Oaks, especially the English Oak Quercus robur and Sessile Oak Quercus petraea are the host plants for more than 70 species of cynipid gall wasp. It is the larval stage of these insects that induce the plant to produce abnormal growths, known as galls, that enclose the developing larvae. Galls can be seen on Oak trees all along the river, these are in Area 5.  Silk Button Gall The Silk Button Gall Wasp Neuroterus numismalis produces a fairly common gall and gets its name from its silky button-like appearance. Up to 100 galls can appear on the underside of the leaves of an English Oak.

21/07/25  Pale Prominent The moth -trap, was out in my Area 4 garden overnight on 20/07/25 and emptied this morning.The catch was just 18 moth's of 11 species. Gypsy Moth Highlights were Pale Prominent Pterostoma palpina , Gypsy Moth Lymantria dispar and Peppered Moth Biston betularia   Peppered Moth   are typically white with black 'peppered' markings. Two darker forms are more common where the trunks of trees are blackened by pollution. This is a classic example of evolution in action and has been much studied. f. carbonaria:Is sooty black, frequent in industrial areas correlating with levels of industrial pollution. With 4 new moth species added ,the total for 2025 is now 229 species. Following inspection and recording/photographing anything caught was released.

19/07/25  Pebble Hook-tip The moth -trap, was out in my Area 4 garden overnight on 18/07/25 and emptied this morning.The catch was 76 moth's of 32 species. Tree-lichen Beauty Highlights were Pebble Hook-tip Drepana falcataria , Tree-lichen Beauty Cryphia algae and the micro moth Eudonia mercurella .   Eudonia mercurella  With 6 new moth species added ,the total for 2025 is now 225 species. Following inspection and recording/photographing anything caught was released.

18/07/25   Holly Blue Another scorching day and through my Area 4 garden were many butterflies including, Gatekeeper Holly Blue Celastrina argiolus , Gatekeeper Pyronia tithonus Red Admiral Vanessa atalanta and a Large White Pieris brassicae .  Red Admiral Butterflies will visit any garden, however small if they can feed on suitable nectar plants and a well thought out garden can attract many species of butterfly.

17/07/25  Ethima quadrillella The moth -trap, was out in my Area 4 garden overnight on 16/07/25 and emptied this morning.The catch was 47 moth's of 20 species. Oak Processionary Highlights were the micro moth Ethima quadrillella , Oak Processionary Euproctis similis and a very worn Mottled Rustic Macaria liturata .   Mottled Rustic  With 3 new moth species added ,the total for 2025 is now 219 species. Following inspection and recording/photographing anything caught was released.

16/07/25    Beautiful demoiselle Seen at the Weir pool in Area 5 during Balsam pulling was an Emperor Dragonfly Anax imperator feeding over the pool. Meanwhile in the afternoon at my Area 4 garden, a female Beautiful demoiselle Calopteryx virgo briefly popped in.

15/07/25   Black Rustic A cooler night, the moth -trap, was out in my Area 4 garden overnight on 14/07/25 and emptied this morning.,a much reduced catch with 26 moth's of 18 species. Yellow-tail Highlights were Black Rustic Aporophyla nigra , Yellow-tail Euproctis similis This snowy white moth is easily mistaken for the similar brown-tail, until it lifts its abdomen to reveal a burst of golden-yellow. and a Tawny-barred Angle Macaria liturata .   Tawny-barred Angle With 6 new moth species added ,the total for 2025 is now 216 species. Following inspection and recording/photographing anything caught was released.

14/07/25    Old Lady In Area 3 on the river and seen during Balsam pulling under a bridge were 10 + Old Lady Mormo maura . It hides by day in old buildings and sheds, and frequents damp localities as well as waste ground and gardens. Also seen floating up the river was a dead female Stag Beetle Lucanus cervus .

13/07/25   Leopard Moth Another very warm night so the moth -trap, was out in my Area 4 garden overnight on 12/07/25 and emptied this morning.,a reasonable catch with 84 moth's of 27 species. Ruby Tiger Highlights were Leopard Moth Zeuzera pyrina , Ruby Tiger Phragmatobia fuliginosa and a Jersey Tiger Euplagia quadripunctaria .Phragmatobia fuliginosa   Jersey Tiger With 10 new moth species added ,the total for 2025 is now 209 species. Following inspection and recording/photographing anything caught was released.

11/07/25   Bright-line Brown-eye Back home after a few days away in Norfolk so the moth -trap, was out in my Area 4 garden overnight on 10/07/25 and emptied this morning.A smaller catch with 74 moth's of just 12 species. Carcina quercana  Highlights were Bright-line Brown-eye Lacanobia oleracea and Carcina quercana with 1 new moth species added ,the total for 2025 is now 199 species. Following inspection and recording/photographing anything caught was released.

06/07/25   Sawfly larvae In my Area 4 garden a Grey Willow is currently being devesated by the larvae of the Sawfly Willow Leaf Euura pavida . Larva associated mainly with Willow but occasionally with Aspen.The eggs are stuck to the leaves.

05/07/25   Small Rivulet The moth -trap, was out in my Area 4 garden overnight on 04/07/25 and emptied this morning.A smaller catch with 62 moth's of 23 species. Orange Footman  Highlights were Small Rivulet Perizoma alchemillata Orange Footman an Orange Footman Mythimna impura and a Buff Footman Eilema depressa .  Buff Footman 3 new moth species added ,the total for 2025 is now 198 species. Following inspection and recording/photographing anything caught was released.

04/07/25   Green-veined White In Area 10 at Lunchtime a Green-veined White Pieris napi was seen on the Bramble flowers.

03/07/25   Scorched Carpet The moth -trap, was out in my Area 4 garden overnight on 02/07/25 and emptied this morning.The moth-trap has quietened off now we're into fresher conditions,a smaller catch with 58 moth's of 25 species. Smoky Wainscot  Highlights were Scorched Carpet Ligdia adustata Both the English and Latin names refer to the 'scorched' appearance of this species a Smoky Wainscot Mythimna impura and a Lesser Broad-bordered yellow underwing Eupithecia pulchellata .   Lesser Broad-bordered yellow underwing this moth does show some variation, with many individuals showing a purplish tinge. With 7 new moth species added ,the total for 2025 is now 195 species. Following inspection and recording/photographing anything caught was released.

02/07/25  Gatekeeper Carol Woodman was in Area 7, Butterfly watching and saw a Gatekeeper Pyronia tithonus , Red Admiral Vanessa atalanta , Comma Polygonia c-album , Large White Pieris brassicae , Small White Pieris rapae and a possible Common Blue Polyommatus icarus .

01/07/25  Scarce silver-lines  The moth trap, was out in my Area 4 garden overnight on 30/06/25 and emptied this morning. The best catch so far with 189 moth's of 36 species. Poplar Lutestring Highlights were Scarce silver-lines Bena bicolorana a Poplar Lutestring Tethea or Characterised by its four cross-lines, or 'lutestrings' on the inner part of the forewing and a battered Foxglove Pug Eupithecia pulchellata .   Foxglove Pug With 9 new moth species added ,the total for 2025 is now 188 species. Following inspection and recording/photographing anything caught was released.

28/07/25 Unbranched Bur-reed Seen in the Emm Brook during Balsam pulling in Area 7 was Unbranched Bur-reedSparganium emersum .

16/07/25 English oak  In Area 5 the English Oak Quercus robur , also called the Pendunculate Oak have large amounts of acorns this year.

05/07/25  Scabious  Seen in Area 5 in the widflower areas on the spine road. Musk Mallow during the litterpick were Scabious Scabiosa caucasica , Musk Mallow Malva moschata It lives up to its name, producing a delicate, musky smell.   Greater Knapweed and Greater Knapweed Centaurea scabiosa .t

Fungi/ Lichen

21/07/25  Chicken of the Woods In Area 4, on the spine Road dead Oak a Chicken of the Woods Laetiporus sulphureus fungus is putting on a magnificent display .It is an easy-to-spot bracket fungus due to its distinctive sulphur-yellow colour.

12/07/25  Oak Bracket In Area 4 on an Oak tree near Ripple stream Bridge was a Oak Bracket Pseudoinonotus dryadeus fungus.The thick amber liquid it secretes makes the bracket look as if it is dripping honey. As the bracket ages, it starts to smell very unpleasant.

11/07/25 A Red Fox Vulpes vulpes , was seen wandering past my house in Area 4 at 01:30.
